Resolution

There are several resolution finish options for an SLA model. Build resolution is typically defined by two factors – laser beam diameter and layer thickness. The two options, commonly referred to as normal or high resolution, are described below:

Normal Resolution

.010" laser beam diameter
004" or .006" layer thickness

The normal resolution mode, with a .010" laser spot, and a build envelope of 10"x10"x10", is a good choice for most geometry – high volume parts and parts with features that have a minimum cross section of .015" - .020". Stair-stepping in both the .004" and the .006" layer thickness options will be more evident than parts built in high-resolution mode, but are still capable of being finished to any desired level.

Normal-resolution with .006" layer thickness is the most economical of all resolution choices.

High Resolution

.003" laser beam diameter
.0025" or .004" layer thickness

The small spot size in the high-resolution mode is best suited for small intricate parts with thin wall sections. It results in accurate parts with crisp detail and minimal stair-stepping. The .0025" layer thickness in high-resolution mode makes this the highest cost option. The .004" layer thickness reduces the costs somewhat, but depending on your geometry, may result in a model with more stair-stepping. Detail is very good. Parts built in the high resolution mode need to fit within a build envelope of approximately 5" x 5" x 5".

Phillips is currently running WaterClear® Ultra 10122 resin in both the normal and high resolution SLA machines.
